SYNOPSIS
The Campaign takes an inspiring look at the “No on 8” campaign in California to defend same-sex marriage and the history of relationship recognition in the U.S. It is a human drama following ordinary people compelled by a passionate belief in equality. Their stories are placed inside a national context that explores the push for recognition of same-sex relationships since the 1950s. The Campaign provides a window into a timeless question: What inspires everyday people to opt-in for something bigger than themselves?
ABOUT THE DIRECTOR
Christie Herring is an award-winning independent film producer and director with a strong interest in social justice. Her first film, Waking in Mississippi, with Andre Robinson, focused on the wildly controversial mayoral election in her childhood hometown—a contest that ended in the threat of a race riot. Her short films Chickens in the City, Howdy Partner, and Bodies and Souls have won multiple awards, screened at film festivals around the world, and aired on PBS. Christie’s producing and editing credits include work with PBS, National Geographic, A&E, museums, universities, community nonprofits, and technology companies.

The Campaign premiered the week Prop 8 was thrown out by the Supreme Court—at the 2013 Frameline Film Festival and on KCET Los Angeles public television, receiving major press. With community partners the ACLU, the Task Force, and PFLAG, the film has screened at festivals and community centers across the country, from Seattle to Atlanta and beyond. Distributed by NETA and airing on PBS World, The Campaign aired on over 60 percent of the U.S. public television markets by summer 2014. Christie has been invited to screen the film and lecture across the U.S., including at Stanford and George Mason universities and at conferences including Creating Change. Our engagement efforts continue with the Hannah Fund, a joint effort of The Campaign and The Task Force, honoring the life and work of Hannah Johnson-LeBlanc. An educational guide is in development with the San Francisco Film Society.
