SYNOPSIS

In China, an unprecedented surge in African migration has led to a rise in marriages between Chinese women and African men. A Guangzhou Love Story captures the love, heartache, and real life challenges of Afro-Chinese couples attempting to forge a meaningful future together in the face of racism and xenophobia.

ABOUT THE DIRECTOR

Black and white portrait.Kathy Huang is a Taiwanese-American filmmaker with a particular interest in issues of identity and belonging. She recently completed her first feature documentary Tales of the Waria, an ITVS co-production following transgender women searching for love in Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslim country. Winner of several Audience Choice Awards and Best Documentary from the San Diego Asian Film Festival, it was broadcast nationally on PBS in June 2012. Her other short films include Night Visions (Tribeca Film Festival, SILVERDOCS, “War and Peace Award” Media That Matters Film Festival) and Miss Chinatown USA (Tribeca Film Festival, PBS broadcast 2008).
