Welcome Nekisa Cooper to our Board!
Chicken & Egg Pictures is proud to announce our newest Board Member: Nekisa Cooper. Nekisa is a content creator passionate about elevating underrepresented voices and creating content that inspires meaningful conversation. Nekisa is currently Vice President of Content at MasterClass. Before MasterClass, she was an award-winning producer whose credits include the feature Pariah, part of The Criterion Collection, and the SundanceTV documentary, Eventual Salvation. Before media-making, Nekisa worked in brand management for Colgate-Palmolive and L’Oreal; and held assistant women’s basketball coaching positions at the Division I, Division III, and high school levels. She has an MBA from Clark Atlanta University and a BA from The College of William & Mary.

Nest-supported Films on the SIMA 2022 Finalists’ List
Congratulations to the two Nest-supported films and four AlumNest projects for being finalists for the 10th Annual Social Impact Media Awards (SIMA 2022). The SIMA Awards recognize storytelling that ignites social change and portrays the most pressing social issues. Chicken & Egg Pictures was the proud recipient of the SIMA Vanguard Award in 2020 and we’re thrilled to see so many supported films recognized this year.

Ascension, Simple As Water & Writing With Fire on the 94th Oscars® shortlist
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced on Tuesday, December 21 their shortlist for documentary features and documentary short subject. At Chicken & Egg Pictures we are sending massive congratulations to the 3 Nest-supported films on the list: Ascension, Simple As Water, and Writing With Fire, as well as to the 5 films from the AlumNest.
We are egg-cited to see these films on these lists and look forward to the Nominations list, which will be announced on Tuesday, February 8. Nominations voting begins on Thursday, January 27 and concludes on Tuesday, February 1.

Congratulations to Communications Assistant Mariana on her Documentary Magazine Fellowship!
The International Documentary Association (IDA) announced “four emerging writers who will participate in the Documentary Magazine Editorial Fellowship Program. This is the second edition of the fellowship, funded in part by grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.” And one of the four is Chicken & Egg Pictures’ 2021–2022 Communications Assistant & Graphic Designer Mariana Sanson.

Fellows will participate in IDA’s editorial planning process led by Editor Tom White and Managing Editor Bedatri Datta Choudhury, receive a quarterly stipend to write articles for the publication, partake in eight mentorship sessions with documentary industry leaders , and attend the Getting Real Documentary Film Conference in September 2022.”

Born and raised in Mexico City, Mariana Sanson has worked as a film festival producer, international guest coordinator, and national volunteer liaison. She is deeply interested in women’s representation, documentary intersectionality, working towards the creation of a more equitable documentary industry, and society’s relationship with media. Mariana assists our External Relations team by helping to tell the story of Chicken & Egg Pictures in design and communications. Congratulations, Mariana! We love seeing you soar in the documentary industry.
We Stand with Reproductive Rights
The Supreme Court recently heard arguments in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, one of the most significant United States abortion cases in decades. This case has the potential to undo Roe v. Wade and is a threat to the constitutional rights of people who can become pregnant in the United States, where our organization is based. At Chicken & Egg Pictures we are deeply concerned about the possible outcomes of this case— such as preventing access to safe and legal abortions—and stand in support of reproductive rights.
We are living a defining moment for present and future generations, and we fiercely believe in the transformative power of documentary, especially in a call to action moment like this. Over the past sixteen years, Chicken & Egg Pictures has supported filmmakers who skillfully weave deeply humane storytelling to showcase the impact of reproductive restrictions. This work builds an underground network of emboldened pro-choice activists who trust women to handle abortion.

Gender Parity & Nest-supported Films at at Sundance
At Chicken & Egg Pictures we are egg-static to see two (Egg)celerator grantees and feature documentary debuts on the 2022 Sundance Film Festival program: Mija and Midwives, as well as six films by the AlumNest. The festival will come back with a hybrid format, with in-person activities in Park City, Salt Lake City and the Sundance Mountain Resort in Utah and with online events from Thursday, January 20 to Sunday, January 30. We are also excited to see that nonfiction films are once again one of the strongest sections of the festival’s program.
Last week, Director Tabitha Jackson and Director of Programming Kim Yutani, announced this edition’s details. Yutani and Jackson shared important statistics about women filmmakers in their program selection:
“Of the submissions to Sundance this year, only 28 percent were from women. Yet among all the features selected, 52 percent were directed by women. When asked whether the programmers decided to boost women auteurs over men, they steered around the question, saying they are always looking to promote female filmmakers. Jackson added: “The slightly depressing fact is that the figure of 28 percent submissions from women has remained pretty static across the years. It is a figure that we would wish to see higher because of what it indicates about the state of the industry. It’s surprising that so few are submitting.”

Celebrating Maite Alberdi’s Trail of Success
At Chicken & Egg Pictures we are sending egg-stra special congratulations to 2020 Chicken & Egg Award recipient Maite Alberdi. The trail of success for her 2020 Academy® nominated film The Mole Agent, prods. Maite Alberdi and Marcela Santibanez, continued through this fall.
The film received an award for Best Iberoamerican Film by the Mexican Academy of Arts and Motion Pictures (Academia Mexicana de Artes y Ciencias Cinematográficas), one of the most important film awards in Latin America and better known as “the Ariel.” The Mole Agent also received two Platino Awards (Premios Platino) for Best Iberoamerican Documentary, and the Film in Education and Values award. During her acceptance speech, Maite made powerful remarks about the documentary field, “Documentaries are movies, just like all of them, only we work with reality as raw material. The Mole Agent seems like a fictional film thanks to a team capable of exploring new cinematographic forms.”
In October, Micromundo Producciones, founded and directed by Maite, celebrated the ten year anniversary of their first film The Lifeguard with a brand new website, which includes a video on demand channel with all of her films available worldwide.
